Transferring emails from Outlook to Gmail can streamline your email management by consolidating your communications into one platform. This guide provides a step-by-step process to ensure a smooth and efficient transfer of your emails from Outlook to Gmail.
Method 1: Using Gmail’s Import Feature
1. Open your Gmail account and click on the gear icon in the upper-right corner.
2. Select “See all settings” from the dropdown menu.
3. Go to the “Accounts and Import” tab> Find the “Import mail and contacts” option and click on it.
4. A new window will pop up. Enter your Outlook email address. Click “Continue” and enter the password for your Outlook account.
5. Grant Permission: If prompted, log in to your Outlook account and authorise Gmail to access your emails and contacts.
6. Gmail will then ask you which items you want to import> Make sure to select “Emails.” You can also choose to import contacts and calendar events if needed.
7. Click “Start Import” to begin the transfer process.
8. Once your emails have been imported, your imported emails will appear in your Gmail account under a label named after your Outlook email address.
Update Email Forwarding Settings
To ensure future emails are redirected to your Gmail account, update the email forwarding settings in your Outlook account.
1. Click on the top right gear icon on Outlook.
2. Navigate to the “Email” tab> “Forwarding”> Toggle on “Enable Forwarding.”
3. Enter your email address for Gmail and click “Save” to enable forwarding.
Method 2: Using the Outlook Desktop App
1. Open the Outlook desktop app> Click on the “File” menu> Click “Open & Export,” then select the “Import/Export” option.
2. Choose the “Export to a file” action and click “Next.”
3. Choose “Outlook Data File (.pst)” as your file type and click “Next.”
4. Select the folder you want to export and click “Next.” To export the entire account, select your address.
5. Choose where you want to save the exported messages and click “Finish.” You now have your entire inbox exported as a .pst file.
6. Log into your Gmail account, Click on the gear icon> “See all settings”> “Forwarding and POP/IMAP”> Enable IMAP access> “Save Changes.”
7. In Outlook, Go to “File”> “Info”> “Add account.” Sign into your Gmail account.
8. Open the “File” menu> Click “Open & Export” > Select “Import/Export” option> “Import from another program or file”> Click “Next.”
9. Click “Outlook Data File (.pst)”> “Browse”> Select your .pst file> Then click “Next”> Import items into the same folder in your Gmail account> “Finish.”
