Which is better for small business websites: WordPress, Wix, IONOS or Shopify?

That depends on what your business needs most – flexibility, speed, simplicity or e-commerce.

WordPress is the most flexible of the bunch. It’s ideal if you want full control over your site’s design and function, or if you’re planning to grow significantly. With thousands of themes and plugins available, it’s scalable and customisable – but you’ll need to manage hosting, updates and security yourself.

Wix is perfect for small businesses wanting a professional site up and running quickly. Its drag-and-drop builder is simple to use, with all hosting and support included. That said, it has limited custom options compared to WordPress, so it’s best for brochure-style sites or portfolios.

IONOS is a strong contender for those looking for an affordable, reliable platform with bundled hosting. It’s suited to basic websites, with tools for email, domain registration and support. The downside? Fewer design options and a steeper learning curve than Wix.

Shopify is built for e-commerce and does it brilliantly. If your main goal is to sell products online, it’s hard to beat. But if you’re a service-based business or need a non-retail site, it’s usually not the right fit.
