How to Password Protect Files on Your Computer

Protecting your files with a password is a key way to keeping your important data safe. For Windows users, you can use the built-in encryption feature called BitLocker. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to password protect files on your computer:

1. Choose the files or folders you want to protect.

2. Right-click on the file or folder you want to encrypt and select Properties>Advanced>Encrypt contents to secure data>OK

3. Choose full-folder encryption in Windows to secure both the file and its parent folder along with all the files within it.

4. A pop-up window will appear. You’ll have the choice to back up the encryption key to ensure you always have access to the file. If you don’t want to back up, just select Never back up to finish. Otherwise, choose Back up now and follow the steps.

5. Make sure to set a strong password for your encrypted files. A strong password should be at least 12 characters long and include a combination of letters, numbers, and special characters.

6. After password protecting your files, test access to make sure the protection is working as expected. Try opening the files or folders and enter the password when prompted.
