Spam emails. We all hate them, don’t we? They clutter our inboxes, waste our time, and can even pose a security risk. This is why we’re here to share some methods to help you put an end to those spam emails once and for all. We’ll also share some email best practices to help you stay safe and secure.
Strengthen Your Email Filters
Most email services, such as Gmail, Outlook, and Yahoo, have built-in spam filtering capabilities to stop spam emails. Make sure to enable this feature and periodically check the spam folder to ensure no legitimate emails are getting caught.
Email Filters in Outlook:
- Using the Outlook web app, click on Settings (gear icon in the top right)>Email>Junk Email.
- From here you can add Blocked senders, and Safe Senders, as well as add Filters to who can send you emails.
Email Filters in Gmail:
To Create a Filter in Gmail You Can:
- Click on the search box at the top and click on the Show search options icon that is at the end of the search box.
- Choose your search criteria>click Create filter.
- Choose what action you want the filter to take and click Create filter to complete the action.
Create a Filter Using a Specific Message:
- Select the email you want to use to create the filter by clicking the 3 dots in the top right>Filter messages like these.
Avoid Sharing Your Email Address
Next, be proactive about your email address exposure. Avoid using your primary email address for online forums, and competitions, or signing up for newsletters unless you truly value the content they provide. Spammers often scrape these platforms for email addresses to target. Instead, use a separate email for signing up on websites or subscribing to newsletters. The more public your email address is, the more likely it is to be picked up by spambots.
If you want to sign up for online platforms, consider creating a separate email address to stop spam emails.
Email Unsubscribes
If you receive unwanted newsletters or promotional emails, the best practice is to unsubscribe. However, be careful when doing so. Some spammers use the unsubscribe link as a way to confirm that your email address is active which can lead to more spam. Instead, mark these emails as spam.
Avoid Clicking on Suspicious Links
Spam emails often contain malicious links that can lead to malware or phishing attacks. Be cautious and avoid clicking on any links from unknown senders or emails that look suspicious.
Use Disposable Email Addresses
Disposable email addresses are great for one-off actions. They serve as a temporary inbox that can receive confirmation emails and similar one-time communications without exposing your real email address to potential spammers.
Consider Using Third-party Spam Filters
If you’re still struggling with spam emails, you may want to explore third-party spam filtering services. These services use advanced algorithms and machine learning to identify and block spam emails effectively.
Third-party spam filters often offer a more robust solution than the built-in ones provided by email services, using advanced algorithms to keep unwanted emails out of your inbox.
